Today in Bible we read about Jonathan showing honor to David by convincing Saul not to kill him.  In math Gavin worked some more on place value and using the abacus to add numbers with place values to the 1000s.  He remembered this from last year so it was another easy day for him!  We did have our first Latin lesson and we just watched the lesson on DVD, Thursday we will work on the book together.  Gavin also practiced piano today!

In science we learned what 'classify' means and started by classifying buttons.  We divided them into groups based on size, color, number of holes, etc. and talked about how classifying them could be helpful.  Then we used animal flashcards to classify animals.  We separated them by skin covering (fur, feathers, scales, etc.), where they live (water, land, air), whether they were an herbivore, carnivore or omnivore and even by oviparous or viviparous.  Then we talked about why it may be useful to classify animals.  We will talk more about this on Thursday.  Because we are learning about animals, this is Gavin's first reader for first grade:

Here are our pictures for today!  These are from math...

And these are from science.  He doesn't look thrilled in the pictures but Gavin did have fun classifying the buttons and animals.  He had to read the back of the cards to find out what some of the animals ate, etc.
