Today Gavin worked on adding 10s and then adding 1 to numbers over 10, like 35 + 1 = 36.

Then we read two books about the daily life of the Pilgrim children.  Gavin colored two Pilgrim children (a boy and a girl) and drew a picture of something they would have done in their daily life and glued the children onto his scene.

Here is the girl.  She is helping in the kitchen garden.  The scribbles would be the vines on the squash.

The Pilgrim boy is helping in the rye field with woods in the background.

The first book we read reads like a novel but is actually about three actual Pilgrim children named Mary, Remember and Bartholomew.  The conversations are, of course, made up, but the events are real.

Gavin loves Samuel Eaton's Day.  We read it last year too.  It is like the Mayflower book we read yesterday in that it uses real photographs taken of actors at Plymouth Plantation.  It follows Samuel Eaton on his first day working in the fields with the men.  It is really nice because it goes into details about what he wears, what chores he does and what his family life is like along with the photographs so you get a good sense of what it was really like back then.
